Twilight Markets and Lantern Parade

The DREAM Twilight Markets held at Victoria Park attracted thousands of people and with over 60 stalls, no one left disappointed. Live music, great food and Spring cocktails in the Cube Bar and a fantastic array of art shops, sweets, and retail stalls set the scene and were enjoyed by the masses.

The Lantern Parade was again a “highlight”of this year's festival. Giant musical instruments, music notes and exotic birds were among the spectacular display where local school children showcased their masterpieces as they paraded along Talbragar Street and into Victoria Park where the Twilight Markets were being held.

The Macquarie Credit Union 2014 DREAM Festival has announced its Artist of the Year.

Dancer, Ella Havelka, who is currently performing with the Australian Ballet Company, will receive her award later this month.

Festival Vice Chair, Anne Field, said “In a field of high quality nominees, Ella was selected by a panel of representatives from the arts community to receive this award.

Ella is performing with one of the world’s most prestigious ballet companies, and is the first Aboriginal performer to join their ranks. This follows on from several years performing with Bangarra Dance Company.”

Due to Ella’s hectic schedule during October, the awards presentation (Proudly presented by Dubbo Printing Works) will actually be held as a luncheon this month: on Sunday 21st September.

Festival Treasurer Lydia Smith said “Honouring previous recipients, musical director Kellie Dickerson and photographer Mervyn Bishop, have been wonderful experiences for those who have attended the awards ceremonies; and we expect this year’s event to be equally inspiring.”

Established in 2012, the award is designed to raise the profile of the arts, specifically highlighting some of the successful artists who have emerged from the region.

Tickets to the awards luncheon (Proudly presented by Dubbo Printing Works) are available for purchase at www.dreamfest.com.au or by contacting the Artist of the Year Award Coordinator on 0427 843 240.

Following its sold-out premiere season in Melbourne in May, Reception: The Musical (proudly presented by Essential Energy) is coming to Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre for one night only on Friday 24 October as part of the Macquarie Credit Union 2014 DREAM Festival.

“Witty and winning cabaret… brilliant…hilarious… striking and familiar” - Theatre Press

DREAM Festival Chair, Mr John Walkom, said “This is a great opportunity to see yet another successful Dubbo artist. Too often they don’t get a chance to come back to their home town as they’re consumed with their work in the major cities. We’re really excited to have such a wonderful production added to our festival program, with the support of Essential Energy sponsorship.

A celebration of all things administration, Reception: The Musical tells the story of a receptionist who finds joy in the manic world of customer service, stationery orders and thinking on your swivel chair. Inspired by true stories from the front desk, this original cabaret comedy is a must-see for office workers and theatre lovers everywhere!

Written by Dubbo-raised Green Room Award nominated writer/performer Bethany Simons and leading Melbourne pianist Peter de Jager, this uplifting and hilarious production features a toe-tapping original score of songs including My Name is Bethany (Not Stephanie), Do You Have Sticky Tape, I Can’t Help But Help, and They Ring My Bell.

Mr Walkom said “After the show the audience is invited to join the cast for an ‘office party’ in the foyer to celebrate International Year of the Secretary and Administrative Assistant. Food will be provided and the DRTCC bar will be open.”

Reception: The Musical is written and performed by Bethany Simons and Peter de Jager, directed by David Wicks and assistant directed/ choreographed by Joseph Simons. Joseph was a special guest performer at the 2013 DREAM Dance Challenge.

The Dubbo community has been asked to nominate a current professional artist from the region for the 2014 DREAM Artist of the Year Award.

Nominations are invited until Friday, 22 August 2014 with the successful nominee to be honoured at the DREAM Artist of the Year Award ceremony in October.

Dubbo Regional Entertainment Arts and Music (DREAM) Festival Vice Chair, Anne Field said "The region had produced a high number of professional artists - ranging from performing artists to visual artists - and it was important they were recognised.

Previous recipients of this award are:
  • Ms Kellie Dickerson, is one of Australia’s most successful musical directors (Legally Blonde and Wicked) and one of few female conductors in the world,
  • Mr Mervyn Bishop, multi-award winning photographer and the first indigenous photographer at the Sydney Morning Herald" Ms Field said.
“The Artist of the Year Awards dinner is a wonderful experience for those who have attended the ceremonies, and it is a proud moment for the Dubbo region.

“We look forward to celebrating the success of our 2014 recipient.”

Application forms are available online at www.dreamfest.com.au

An assessment panel comprising representatives of several arts organisations will make a recommendation for the award.

DREAM Festival Treasurer, Lydia Smith, also encouraged the community to nominate professional artists from all artistic fields.

“The application process is easy and we welcome all nominations,” she said.

“However, given the large number of successful artists from the Dubbo region, assessing the applications could be quite difficult.”
