Supported by Bob Berry Real Estate

Artists of all ages are asked to produce a work for entry into this year's TalbragArt exhibition and competition, with a chance to win one of several prizes.

This year’s theme is wildest dreams ….all the things that one has ever imagined or hoped. Usually used in a phrase such as "in one's wildest dreams" or "never in one's wildest dreams."… For example, Never in my wildest dreams did I think that someday I'd be living in Dubbo! …one of Australia's fastest-growing inland cities and home to Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Or “My wildest dream is to travel the world” … the opportunities are endless!

For those interested in entering, click here.

Artworks will go on display in Talbragar Street businesses for the period of the festival.

The exhibition will commence on Thursday 17th October, with a walking tour leaving the Old Dubbo Gaol precinct at 6pm (from the Pianos on the Pavement event).

PLAY ON: THE ART OF SPORT

10 years of the Basil Sellers Art Prize.

A NETS Victoria and Ian Potter Museum of Art touring exhibition.

Play On: The art of sport celebrates 10 years of the Basil Sellers Art Prize, the prestigious and distinctively Australian biennial exhibition that reflects upon one of our great national obsessions – sport. Featuring the winners and other key works from all five instalments of the Prize, Play On: The art of sport brings together diverse explorations of the personal and collective significance of sport and sporting culture from some of Australia’s most accomplished artists. The exhibition encompasses a dynamic range of media, with works that  respond to an equally extensive range of sporting genres, including community footy, women’s boxing, ground-keeping,  gymnastics and AFL.

MERRYN SOMMERVILLE:  THIS HAUNTED HOUSE

This Haunted House by Bega based artist Merryn Sommerville explores the internal oppression of being raised in the Christian religion, and the complexity of negotiating issues of social injustice and identity as a condemned agnostic. Sommerville’s emotive drawings touch on issues of female autonomy, sexuality, disability, morality and mortality. She uses an unexpected psychological presence in her female subjects as a surrogate to explore her space within society. This exhibition will explore the shift in social identity as women reach the age of thirty and are expected to reproduce. This is a HomeGround exhibition, produced in collaboration between WPCC and Orana Arts.

MAD MOSSY: MURDER, MAYHEM AND THE FORGOTTEN CLASS

Albert Andrew Moss is almost lost to history, but 80 years ago his name was everywhere. Whispered in pubs, front parlours and corner stores, Dubbo was gripped by the story of ‘Mossy’ and his dramatic trial for the murder of three men. The trial was the most sensational of its day with claims that Moss had killed up to 13 men across NSW. It would place Dubbo at the centre of an explosive criminal tragedy. But was he guilty? Did he get a fair trial? And was the legal system of the day up to handling ‘Mad Mossy’? This is a WPCC exhibition.

Loving Local - Whisky & Cheese Pairing

An opportunity to experience what our surrounding towns have to offer and how much local talent we have out here in the Central West., with Mendooran’s Talented Blackgate Distillery & Bluesky Cheese.

Both are situated in Mendooran, 45 mins from Dubbo. These two businesses, driven by passion, have been making serious waves in their industries

In the oldest town on the Castlereagh River two local cheese enthusiasts have joined forces to create Mendooran’s first cheese business. “We are passionate about making hand crafted cheese from single source milk. We are making our tasty soft cheeses the old fashioned way – with skill, passion and intuition”.

Pip and Deb met during the annual Mendooran Show and got talking. A love of all things artisan and a joint passion for cheese, the girls were the right age to hang up their day jobs and concentrate on producing a high quality product that would appeal to everyone. They even use another Local business, Little Big Dairy Co, a single source dairy on the outskirts of Dubbo to make their amazing cheeses.

Their range includes the Castlereagh Camembert, Peppertree Feta, Beni Blue.

Brian & Genise Hollingworth from Black Gate Distillery are a small husband and wife operation established in 2009 - the first hot climate whisky distillery in NSW. Producing a range of Whiskies and Rum which are both brewed and distilled on site, and a spirit on the richer end of the flavour spectrum. They stick with traditional methods, use the highest quality ingredients/casks available and encourage visitors to visit their distillery to see the processes.

This session will allow you to opportunity to “meet the makers” and pair their products together for a true experience of the culture we have in the Central West.

Smokescreen - Babette's Feast

Presented by Friends of Western Plains Cultural Centre (FOWPCC)

At once a rousing paean to artistic creation, a delicate evocation of divine grace, and the ultimate film about food, the Oscar-winning Babette’s Feast (1987)is a deeply beloved treasure of cinema. Directed by Gabriel Axel and adapted from a story by Isak Dinesen, it is the lovingly layered tale of a French housekeeper with a mysterious past who brings quiet revolution in the form of one exquisite meal to a circle of starkly pious villagers in late nineteenth-century Denmark. Babette’s Feast combines earthiness and reverence in an indescribably moving depiction of sensual pleasure that goes to your head like fine champagne.

About Smokescreen

Smokescreen brings to life iconic and influential films from the history of cinema. In 2019, Smokescreen will be exploring a series of 10 films, each a masterpiece based on great, timeless literature. Smokescreen takes place at the Western Plains Cultural Centre in the Drama Room in the Community Arts Centre.
